A reliable IP camera system depends on solid networking. Choose the right PoE switch, network switch, WiFi access point, and CAT6 cabling for your installation.
Once you choose IP cameras and an NVR, the network underneath determines how reliably your CCTV system runs. The building blocks are PoE switches, network switches, WiFi access points, and CAT6 cabling. See our PoE & CAT6 guide for details.
What you need for a solid install
- PoE switches — deliver power and data over one CAT6 cable. Match the switch’s total PoE budget to the sum of your cameras’ power draws; PTZ/multi-sensor cameras may need PoE+ (30W) ports.
- Network switches — tie cameras, NVR, and router together; use a dedicated PoE switch for cameras with a separate uplink to the NVR on larger installs.
- WiFi access points — extend wireless coverage for Meari WiFi cameras or remote buildings where the router cannot reach.
- CAT6 cabling — recommended for new installs; supports gigabit up to 100m. Use outdoor-rated CAT6 for exposed runs, and keep runs under 100m (add a switch beyond that).
